Yash Raj Films has unveiled a VFX breakdown reel for the film Pathaan, starring Shah Rukh Khan. The visual effects for the film were provided by YRF’s in-house VFX department, YFX. The video shows the elaborate effects work that went into creating the biggest action scenes in the spy-thriller, but fans would also be interested in seeing the film’s many invisible effects.

For instance, the three-and-a-half minute video reveals that the shot in which Dimple Kapadia’s character exits a private jet was filmed entirely on a soundstage. There was no plane involved; Dimple was made to walk down a ramp, with a green screen in the background. But unsurprisingly, all of the film’s big set pieces required intense VFX work.

The video breaks down the Dubai chase sequence, the train scene in which Salman Khan’s Tiger makes his grand entry, and the film’s climatic action scene, in which Shah Rukh’s Pathaan and John Abraham’s villainous Jim fly around on jet packs. The video also reveals how director Siddharth Anand and his team combined real location photography and visual effects to create the frozen lake scene. In the jet pack sequence, the team also used a digital double for SRK in some shots, and used digital makeup on Dimple to show the effects of a toxic chemical. We also get a glimpse of all the CGI cars that were created for the Dubai chase.

Fans were super-impressed with YFX’s work on Pathaan. “Great work… Indian cinema is really progressing in terms of VFX,” one fan commented. “I seriously though the Dubai scene was real but I think most of it was green screen and I thought lake scene was CG but it was real,” another fan commented. A third fan wrote that they were surprised about the underwater scene. “I didn’t expect the underwater scene to be vfx! Hats off! That’s incredible,” the fan wrote.

Promoted as Shah Rukh’s grand comeback to starring roles after a gap of over four years, Pathaan emerged as the biggest Hindi hit of all time in the domestic marketplace. It grossed over Rs 1000 crore worldwide. The franchise will continue with War 2, and a Tiger vs Pathaan crossover film.
