Filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj opened up about his love-hate relationship with veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah, with whom he has collaborated on several projects over the years. In a promo video for his upcoming interview with The Lallantop, the acclaimed director said that Naseer can often be temperamental, and that he always swears to himself that he’ll never work with him again. But Naseer’s sheer talent keeps pulling him back.

Asked about Irrfan Khan and Naseer, he said, “Inn logon mein jo khaas baat hai ke woh itne bade kalakaar hain ke woh kisi bhi kirdaar ko apne dhang se dhaal lete hain, hala ke Naseer saab shooting pe irritate ho jaate hain kabhi kabhi. Unka temper bada woh hai… Har baar unse bolta hoon ab nahi karunga aapke saath kaam, bahut hogaya. Phir jab unka kaam dekhta hoon, Naseer saab ke bina kuch bhi kaam adhura lagta hai (They’re such great actors they can play anybody, but Naseer saab can be temperamental sometimes. He has a bad temper. I always swear I’ll never work with him again, enough is enough. But when I see his performances, I feel my movies would be incomplete without him).”

In a recent interview with Humans of Bombay, the actor revealed that his temper was one of the reasons that his wife Ratna Pathak Shah’s parents objected to their relationship. “Her parents were against it because I was married before, and I was a drug addict and ill-tempered. But she didn’t pay any heed to that, and she braved it. In between, she went to drama school for three years. But we were practically living together. So, when she moved in with me, it was like the most normal thing in the world,” he said.

Naseer and Vishal have collaborated on films such as Maqbool, Omkara, 7 Khoon Maaf, and on the two Ishqiya movies, which Vishal produced for Abhishek Chaubey. Naseer, Ratna, and two of their sons all worked together most recently on Vishal’s new SonyLIV show, Charlie Chopra and the Mystery of Solang Valley. Vishal will also direct the spy film Khufiya, which is due out on Netflix in October.
