The Great Indian Kapil Show The Great Indian Kapil Show has landed in controversy after repeatedly using the terms “Bombay” and “Bambai” instead of the official name “Mumbai”. Ameya Khopkar, the head of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s (MNS) film wing, has issued a stern warning to comedian Kapil Sharma, demanding that the show adhere to the official nomenclature.
Speaking to ANI, he said: “The name of this city is Mumbai. On Kapil’s show, we have long noticed that the city is always referred to as Bombay or Bambai. We oppose this. It’s not an objection, it’s anger. The name of this city is Mumbai. If you can address other cities by their proper names like Chennai, Bengaluru and Kolkata, why insult our city?”
Issuing a clear warning, he added: “If this has happened by mistake, then correct it. Whoever comes on your show, whether celebrities or the anchor, tell them not to call Mumbai as Bombay or Bambai. If this does not happen, the MNS will launch a strong agitation.”
Ameya Khopkar also posted a clip on X, highlighting an instance when actors and siblings Huma Qureshi and Saqib Saleem, while recalling their move from Delhi, referred to Mumbai as Bombay on Kapil Sharma’s show.
As of now, neither Kapil Sharma nor the makers of The Great Indian Kapil Show have issued a response.
Bombay became Mumbai in 1995, reclaiming its name from the Marathi language and the goddess Mumbadevi, worshipped by the city’s original Koli fishing community. Similarly, Calcutta was renamed Kolkata, and Madras became Chennai, each change reflecting a return to local linguistic and cultural roots.
