Manoj Bajpayee was so deep in character as Bhiku Mhatre, a terrified woman ran away from him: ‘I could see fear in her eyes’
Manoj Bajpayee recently opened up on how Bhiku Mhatre, the character he played in Satya (1998) lived with him for a long time. The film is re-releasing in cinemas on January 17.

As the cult classic Satya gears up for its re-release in theatres, actor Manoj Bajpayee reminisced about the intense mental preparation he underwent to portray the iconic character of Bhiku Mhatre. In a revealing anecdote, Bajpayee shared how he became one with the character, often losing himself in the mindset of a gangster.
In an interview with Mid Day, Manoj shared an anecdote. He said, “I was entering a shop and I was completely oblivious to the fact that someone was coming out at the same time… The glass door… And I just barged into the shop. I was living like a gangster in my head because I was always thinking. I was only thinking about Bhiku Mhatre.”
“As I entered, I almost bumped into this girl who was coming out of the shop. She said, ‘Excuse me?’ And, I don’t know, subconsciously, I just looked at her and I saw fear in her eyes. We paused for around 10 seconds, looking at each other, and I could see so much fear in her eyes. She suddenly turned back and rushed out. That was the mental state I had achieved,” he added.

In an earlier interview with PTI, Manoj Bajpayee had revealed how he was supposed to play the title role, but Varma changed his plan, wanting someone who has a “great presence” to play Satya.
“I was very sad that he doesn’t think I have presence. I now thank God, he gave me the right role to work on… Everybody used to feel so excited about my performance but I wasn’t sure if we are doing it right. That feeling of unsureness was always looming large because no one of the film industry was making this kind of a film,” he added.
The film, directed by Ram Gopal Verma and edited by Apurva Asrani, is widely regarded as a landmark in Indian cinema. As Satya prepares to hit the theatres once again on January 17, audiences will have the opportunity to experience the gripping storyline and outstanding performances that made the film a classic.
