Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt, who were rumoured to be in a relationship during the making of the film Saajan, and went on to star in several projects together. But Sanjay’s arrest in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts caused a rift between them, reportedly prompting Madhuri to distance herself from him. In an interview, film journalist and writer Hanif Zaveri claimed to have witnessed firsthand Madhuri’s efforts to not be photographed with Sanjay at a party for a film they were doing together, which had been delayed due to his arrest. Sanjay was out on bail at the time, and the producer had organised a press event where he intended to present the two stars together.
In an interview with Meri Saheli, he said, “When Sanjay Dutt was in jail, the film industry protested against his arrest. Madhuri refused to participate. When Sanjay was released on bail, Mahaanta director Afzal Khan, organised a party. Madhuri gave her word that she would attend the party. I happened to be present as well. There was a stage on one side, and on the other side, there was a table with some chairs. This is where I was sitting. I saw Madhuri enter with her secretary and a few others, but instead of going up to the stage, they stopped and took seats near me.”

Zaveri said that Madhuri had spotted Sanjay on the stage, and was clearly avoiding him. He continued, “I noticed that they were anxious, and assumed that they would make their way to the stage soon. But instead of joining the cast on stage, Madhuri and the others got up and left the venue. All the photographers were waiting to capture Madhuri and Sanjay’s first photo together after his arrest. I knew why she left; Madhuri didn’t want to be photographed with Sanjay.”
Offering more context about their history, he said that Madhuri and Sanjay had been together for some time, and that Madhuri’s mother was quite insistent about her settling down. But when Sanjay was arrested, she decided that it would be the best to separate, because she was concerned about being implicated in his matters as well. “She was afraid that she would be investigated too,” Zaveri said, recalling her mother’s attempts to get her married, first to singer Suresh Wadkar, and then, finally, to doctor Sriram Nene. Madhuri and Sanjay reunited many years later on the film Kalank.
