Be it making a statement, releasing a film, or just wearing something out of the box, filmmaker Karan Johar is at the receiving end of nasty comments online every single time. However, with the latest season of his chat show Koffee With Karan, he has done something so brilliant, one cannot help but applaud the sheer brilliance of it. The witty filmmaker has turned his trolls into content for promotions, a well thought publicity move on his part.
When the first promo of KWK8 released, Karan was seen in conversation with his comscience who mocked him by saying, “Those cheesy jokes with your ‘nepo’ babies supposed to be funny? Every episode was the same. A 50-year-old man asking 20-year-olds about their sex lives.” While these dialogues tell us about what the filmmaker has in mind for the new season, it also shows that he and his team have done a thorough study of what the online negativity was pointing towards after the previous season. A smart way to turn the poison into, well, coffee!
When Karan shot for the first episode of his show featuring Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, which aired on Wednesday, he said it out loud. If the audience likes the show, then it’s the show’s evolution but if it’s boring it will be because ‘janta janardhan’ demanded more mature and meaningful content.
This message was well crafted in the monologue set at the beginning of the show, which he said almost like a disclaimer. Before inviting Deepika and Ranveer, Karan said, “It’s hard to believe that you guys have had such a hold over me that we are doing another season this soon only for you, not because we owe it to Hotstar. Either you loved us way too much or maybe last season warranted a little re-do with a cleaner conscience with a K.”
This was also the filmmaker’s way of announcing that this season is going to be maturer and deeper. “I will soon find out from all of you online how bad I was at that but thanks to you and your words on the internet, we are way more evolved as a fraternity, as a breed and also as a show. So, if your favourites are a bit boring at times, guys its because in 2023 with your social media posts being louder than our item numbers on full blast, even a single tweet can be a full-blown PR nightmare,” announced Karan before inviting the hottest couple of B-town.
So, while many call it gimmickry, it is intelligent of a filmmaker who now knows his fans a little too well and they are not just the ones who love him, but also the ones who love to hate him.
Interestingly Koffee With Karan Season 8 has trending on Twitter since it went on air on Wednesday night and as KJo would say, “Toodles”.
