Despite ending their marriage over two years ago, filmmaker Kiran Rao and her former spouse, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, continue to maintain a familial connection, apart from co-parenting their son, Azad. Kiran, who frequently mentions her strong bond with Aamir and his family, recently remarked that during their marriage, they never experienced significant conflicts.
“Anyone who is married will tell you marriage has its challenges. And certainly, I have had my share of fights, and we have dealt with things. But actually, Aamir and I have never really fought, it is very strange. We have our disagreements, but we never have big fights,” she said during a chat with Puja Talwar.
“It is also because I think we (herself and Aamir) respect each other a lot. We understand each other quite well, it is just a case of finding the right argument to convince the other person or to be convinced. Our relationship is like that; and we are both not too proud to agree (with each other). And that is one of the advantages of having been in this marriage. We never saw any turbulence of the kind that a lot of people go through. We have had our share of ups and downs, but never anything that I could term even vaguely antagonistic,” she asserted.
Previously, during a recent chat with The Week, Kiran mentioned that inclusivity comes naturally to them. “It comes very naturally to us as people to be inclusive. My family was also at the wedding. It’s something that we honestly didn’t have to think about. We are a family. In fact, we have Monday night dinners where we all get together.”
“We also live in the same housing society. My mother-in-law stays upstairs, Reena lives next door and Nuzhat (Aamir’s cousin) also lives nearby. It’s because we genuinely like each other as human beings. I hang out with Reena and Nuzhat independently of Aamir, too. My sisters-in-law live upstairs and I adore them. These are relationships you shouldn’t lose if you get divorced. Aamir and I didn’t have an acrimonious divorce; we may have parted as a couple, but we are very much a family,” she added.
Kiran Rao, who worked as an assistant director to Ashutosh Gowariker on Lagaan, married Aamir in 2005. In 2011, they announced the birth of their son Azad Rao Khan through a surrogate mother. In 2021, the couple announced their separation in a joint statement.
Kiran Rao is currently gearing up for the release of her upcoming directorial venture Laapataa Ladies, which will hit the screens on March 1. Produced jointly by Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao and Jyoti Deshpande, the film stars Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Ravi Kishan and Chhaya Kadam in key roles.
