Karan Johar recalls the only time he got a ‘whack’ from his mother, how it inspired a scene in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham
Karan Johar recalled the only time he got a 'whack' from his mother at age 12 and shared that this inspired a scene in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.

Karan Johar has had a comfortable upbringing but there was one point in his life when Karan got a “whack” from his mother Hiroo Johar. In a recent conversation, Karan opened up about that incident with a laugh. The filmmaker has always borrowed a lot from his personal life and sprinkled it into his movies and one such incident was seen in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham when the younger Rohan couldn’t tie his shoelaces until he was in his teens.
In a chat on the Be A Man Yaar podcast, Karan recalled that as a 12-year-old, he couldn’t tie his shoelaces either. “That was me in that scene… not being able to tie shoelaces is me. In fact, the only time I got a whack from my mom was because, at age 12, I couldn’t tie my shoelaces,” he recalled.
The filmmaker then shared as to why he couldn’t tie his shoelaces. “You know why I couldn’t tie my shoelaces? Because I couldn’t bend, my stomach was coming in the way,” he shared and added, “It was ridiculously spoiled of me.”
Karan Johar has previously opened up about his childhood and said that his parents were his pillars of support all through his childhood even though he faced bullying from some of his peers. He previously spoke about being called a “pansy”, a derogatory slang word used for an effeminate man, and shared on Tweak India, “It used to really haunt me. It wasn’t my weight to that extent but the word that made me feel like I wasn’t anywhere like the other children. It became my identity. I had to look more manly to fit in. I hope parents (today) are more understanding, like my dad and mom were. So, the sense of body and feeling of personality being called pansy were things that still haunt me. When I see it with other children, I am most compassionate to that situation because I know what I had felt at that time.”
