Karan Johar Exclusive Interview: At the Express Adda, held in Mumbai on Monday, filmmaker Karan Johar in a conversation with the Executive Director of The Indian Express, Anant Goenka, and the Indian Express’ film critic Shubhra Gupta, spoke about wanting to leave behind a legacy for his twins–Yash and Roohi. Karan welcomed them via surrogacy in 2017.

When asked about how his life has changed after Yash and Roohi’s birth, Karan said, “I think there has been a subliminal change. A change that I don’t know if I can articulate in ways that are definitive. There is a lot more spring in myself, there is a lot more energy to do much more and achieve, and maybe subliminally it’s because I want to leave a legacy that they can be proud of. But simultaneously, I also feel that my parents never dictated any professional decisions for me.

He continued, “They did not want me initially to enter the film business, but they didn’t stop me either. I think we should not put the pressure of our lineage or legacy on them, they should be able to take their individual decisions. Right now, I am building the company so that I can protect their future, but I don’t know if they will be part of Dharma in future.”

Karan revealed that his kids are six and a half years old and have not seen a single Hindi movie yet. He added, “For me, if I realise at a certain age that they are not inclined towards the business, I think one should leave the film studio to people who are genuine filmmakers…”

The filmmaker also said that he is not ‘overly protective’ of his kids. He said, “I have never ever stopped the flow of things. My kids have always been exposed to people. That is a culture in our family. For us, friends have been our family and I am not stopping anything. They go to parties, they get papped. They don’t understand exactly why they are being photographed. But I don’t stop it, I am not overly protective. I am not covering their face or taking back entries.”

In a recent interview, actor Abhishek Bachchan also spoke about the heft of his family name, and said that his wife is carefully teaching their daughter what it means to be a Bachchan.
