Actor John Abraham spoke about his middle-class upbringing, and said that he lives a humble life to this day, despite accumulating a vast fortune through his strategic investments. He said that everybody should strive to earn money, and that there is nothing wrong with wanting to be wealthy, but he also highlighted how important living a simple lifestyle is to him. In an interview, John said that every piece of clothing that he owns can fit inside one suitcase, and revealed that his driver would often advise him to buy a fancier car, but stopped when he realised that John wasn’t going to.

Appearing on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, John said, “Value-creation is more important than wealth-creation… I always say that I’m a middle-class person, not to romanticise my struggles, but to say that the value-system that every middle-class person has is their biggest strength. Being middle-class is an advantage… Make money, generate wealth, but mentally, always remain middle-class.”

John said that he lives simply to this day. “I don’t want to create a false impression, but every piece of clothing I own can fit inside a single suitcase. I don’t have many clothes, and I want to keep it simply. I usually wear slippers. I drive a pickup truck, and my driver, who has been with me for many years, would often tell me to buy a more expensive car. I asked him why. When I go for shoots, the production sends an Innova, and my office is just 1 kilometre away from my house. What will I do with a car worth Rs 4 crore? It’s a depreciating asset, and it will have no bearing on my work.”

John said that he doesn’t begrudge those who ‘enjoy spending money and shopping’, it’s just that he doesn’t want to. “That’s their life state. In my life state, I’m afraid of spending, because of where I come from. I would be scared to spend so much money on shoes and bags. And that’s why I hold back,” he said.

In the same interview, John opened up about witnessing the struggles that his parents endured during his childhood, and recalled the stress that his father was under when he was cheated by a business partner. He said that income inequality frustrated him, and that he holds on to the values that his parents imparted on him to this day. The actor will soon be seen in the film Vedaa, directed by Nikkhil Advani.
