The Bikini Killer aka Charles Sobhraj has been the topic of many a film, book and show. However, Netflix is now putting the spotlight on the man who put him behind the bars, Inspector Madhukar Zende of Bombay Police, who apprehended the serial killer in Goa, leading to an extended prison sentence for the criminal. Only Charles becomes Carl here.

After Killer Soup, Manoj Bajpayee is set to return to the OTT platform with Inspector Zende. The film, loosely based on the true story, will see the actor play the titular role. On Monday, the makers of the film shared its trailer, giving a glimpse into the life of Inspector Zende and his journey of tracking down the elusive ‘Swimsuit Killer’, Carl Bhojraj, played by Jim Sarbh, twice. The character is clearly based on Charles Sobhraj, also known by the same epithet. The film is set to premiere on September 5.

Inspector Zende is introduced as a streetwise, instinct-driven cop who cracked impossible cases with grit, gut, and jugaad (resourcefulness). He was an everyday cop who became a legend by tracking down Carl Bhojraj twice.

The quirky nostalgia-filled trailer shows the relentless chase by Inspector Zende to track the character of Jim Sarbh. It opens with a background voice claiming the film is based on true events followed by a news anchor reading the news: ‘Interpol’s most wanted criminal escaped from Delhi’s Tihar jail last night.’

The trailer then introduces the character of Jim Sarbh. A voiceover asks, “What did you say his name was?” A male voice replies: Carl Bhojraj!” He is someone who has committed 32 murders and has escaped from jail five times.

The trailer then shifts to the character of Manoj Bajpayee. He reads out a news: “Bombay Police have the man who had nabbed Carl.”

Actor Sachin Khedekar is then introduced as Inspector Zende’s senior, who asks him: “Do you know how to catch a snake?” Manoj replies, “Now matter how venomous a snake is… the mongoose always beats the snake.” Khedekar then asks, “So, you’re our mongoose?” Manoj quirkily replies, “Without a tail; two-legged.”

The trailer then shows how Inspector Zende was the man who caught Carl 15 years ago and has been assigned to chase him again all these years later. Written and directed by Chinmay Mandlekar, the film is produced by Jay Shewakramani and filmmaker Om Raut.

Speaking about the film, Manoj Bajpayee told in a statement: “What fascinated me about Inspector Zende was that he wasn’t chasing glory — he was just doing his job, yet caught one of the most notorious criminals twice. His bravery, humour, and that unmistakable Mumbai flavour make his journey truly inspiring. Meeting him felt like stepping into a storybook, with a lifetime of tales to tell. Playing him let me dive into a world that’s as gritty as it is entertaining. The trailer is only a glimpse — the film takes you right into the heart of it. I’m glad his story is finally getting the spotlight it deserves, and that too globally on Netflix.”

Filmmaker Chinmay too shared his fascination with the character and said, “Inspector Zende’s real-life chase had all the ingredients of a gripping film: a larger-than-life cop, a slippery antagonist, and an unforgettable era of Mumbai. But what really stayed with me was the camaraderie, the small moments, and the quirks of the people involved. The trailer hints at the chase, but the film lets you live every beat of it. I can’t wait for audiences to experience it on Netflix.”
