Govinda made Amitabh Bachchan, Rajinikanth wait for three days on Hum set, they would arrive early in the morning: ‘He just wouldn’t come’
Govinda did not come on time for three days and as a result, Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth would wait for him endlessly after reporting early in the morning on the set.

Govinda was one of the biggest stars in the late 1980s and 1990s in Hindi movies but as the actor found more and more success, tales of his tardiness started becoming the norm. At one point, Govinda’s lack of punctuality reached an extent that he made Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth wait on the set of Hum for three days. Vijay Patkar, who was a part of the Mukul Anand film, recently recalled this incident from the set of the film and shared that the entire cast and crew would show up on time but since Govinda wasn’t present, they couldn’t take the desired shot.
In a chat with Filmymntra Media, Vijay shared, “Director Mukul Anand wanted a sunrise shot with the whole family walking by. They couldn’t shoot it for three days because Govinda wasn’t on set. Rajinikanth, Bachchan saab were all on set. On the fourth day, the director requested him again and he came. All of them waited for him because he just wouldn’t come.” When asked how the two veteran stars reacted to Govinda’s tardiness, Vijay recalled that they didn’t say anything. “They are all professionals so they sat there without any complaints. They came with the philosophy that I have allotted my date and time to the producer,” he shared.
Vijay shared that he had even heard that even during Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Bachchan would pick Govinda from his house. “I have heard that during Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Bachchan saab would pick Govinda from his bungalow. He would come in his car, honk outside the gate and pick him,” he said.
When Hum released, Govinda was a rising star and Bachchan was going through a lull in his career. In a 1990 interview with Movie magazine, Bachchan recalled that once a fan ignored him for Govinda’s autograph. “I was shooting with Govinda for Hum when a group of young kids came up to me and one of the boys asked for an autograph. Govinda was standing next to me. There was a young, cute girl who gave him a slap and said ‘Woh nahin, yeh. Govinda ka autograph lo‘ (Not him. Take Govinda’s autograph),” he said.
They later worked together in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. In an earlier chat with Aaj Tak, Govinda said the he was “scared” when started working with Bachchan in BMCM. “People were also scaring me that he always comes on time. I said I can’t (come on time) because I am tied up in so many movies,” he shared and recalled that he decided to have a word with Bachchan about the same. “I requested him that I hope this question does not arise that I don’t come on time. Mr Bachchan said, ‘You call me and let me know what time are you coming. I don’t have a problem and it is not my concern if anyone has a problem with your timings’. After this conversation, I signed that film,” he said.
