Women often find themselves at crossroads while balancing personal and professional lives. Genelia Deshmukh, who chose to stay at home for 10 years, is now raring to come back as an actor. She starred in husband Riteish Deshmukh’s directorial debut Marathi film Ved last year. And now, she is seen playing the lead in Trial Period. The JioCinema film also stars Manav Kaul and brings to life the story of a single mother, who hires a ‘father on trial’ for her child. What follows is a hilarious yet emotional roller-coaster ride as they embark on a journey with this family arrangement.
The actor, in a chat with indianexpress.com, shared that she took a break as she wanted to be honest not just towards her kids but also her work. “I knew I couldn’t manage both together. For me, my call sheet is my call sheet, and anything beyond that bothers me. I have that discipline and I knew I wouldn’t be able to share my time. However, after I did take a break, I started getting comfortable and it was Riteish, who gave me a wake-up call,” she shared.
Genelia shared how she would look at something like Delhi Crime, and wonder how it would be to play such a part. “He told me you look at it, love it, then why aren’t you doing it? He said I was being negligent about something I love. And that actually made me realise I don’t need to work the way I used to. I could take up projects when and how I wanted to. Earlier, I would totally devote myself to film after film. Now, I am also in a state where my kids have grown up and are busy with their own things. So I have time to fit in my own things in the schedule.”
The actor added how she and Riteish are very ‘today’s parents’ and are ‘involved’ in their kids. She added, “When I was shooting for this film in Delhi, he was there and since it was night shifts, he would be with the kids. That support comes to us without the others saying anything. There is an ‘understand and adjust’ factor between us. Also, Riteish really respects my work and the way I want to work. He insists on my taking up more work. Of course, that camaraderie needs to be there. But it’s always about how you make it work out, and you have to.”
Interestingly, while Genelia was away, she would still get offers for films. And after she did Ved, the calls became threefold. “Thankfully people were still calling me but it was few as many thought I had quit acting. Surprisingly, they all thought I left the industry because I got married to this family (Riteish is the son of former Maharashtra CM, late politician Vilasrao Deshmukh). For them, it was never about me. Riteish would often tell me that you don’t want to work and because of you people are telling me,” she laughed to share.
The actor added that while there’s no ‘particular’ genre she is eyeing, she wants to do things that interest her. She shared that when she read Trial Period’s script, she knew she wanted to be a part of it. Genelia added that while it may be on the quirky pretext of ‘papa on rent’, it is also an interesting and real story. The relationship shared between the characters is very relatable and would strike a chord among audiences, as per her.
Talking about the different parenting approaches, she further shared, “I really believe that you live parenting and not learn it. Every day is a surprise. I always say that my kids are my projects, I don’t know what happens the next day. With this film, I got to learn how single mothers dedicate their whole life to their kids. I have a great partner in Riteish, who looks after the kids, and our home when I step out. I cannot imagine doing it all alone. I realised how we take a lot for granted. I must also add that single parents are so amazing and quite interesting ways of bringing their kids up.”

The trailer of the film had got fans talking about the chemistry between the lead and the performance of the young kid. He had the funniest lines and delivered them with ease. However, a section of the audience also felt that kids shouldn’t be subjected to such dialogues and situations. Defending the same, the mother of two said that kids are amazing and always take the world by surprise. “They say the most honest thing in the weirdest of times. And they are also convinced that they are right. When I was reading the script, I was constantly smiling as it was so honest. I know that relationship and I think it’s been projected beautifully on screen,” Genelia concluded.
