While it initially appeared that Sunny Deol's Gadar 2 might topple Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan, the film is currently struggling to surpass the impressive benchmark set by SRK's movie, with earnings of Rs 524 crore. According to early estimates by industry tracker Sacnilk, Gadar 2 added Rs 45 lakh to its total collection on the 40th day of its release, bringing its cumulative earnings to Rs 520.35 crore. Gadar 2 faced formidable competition when Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan hit theatres on September 7. Since its debut, Jawan has been setting records. The film currently boasts a total collection of Rs 507.88 crore and has its sights set on surpassing the record set by Pathaan. Gadar 2 hit screens on August 11, making an impressive opening day collection of Rs 40.1 crore. Despite facing stiff competition from other releases like Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer, Akshay Kumar's OMG 2, and the Alia Bhatt-Ranveer Singh film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, the movie has consistently performed well at the box office. The first installment of Gadar, which was also directed by Anil Sharma, was a blockbuster in 2001, even when it clashed with the critically acclaimed hit Lagaan. The movie ended its run with a global box office collection of Rs 130 crore. Gadar 2 has outperformed its predecessor by a significant margin. The film features Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel, and Utkarsh Sharma and is set against the backdrop of the 1971 India-Pakistan War. Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express gave Gadar 2 a rating of 1.5 stars and commented, "Even when it was released 22 years ago, 'Gadar' was known for being excessively loud and melodramatic, embodying the kind of patriotism-drenched cinema that director Anil Sharma was known for. This style was already becoming outdated. This iteration simply reminds you of the loudness, the saccharine sentimentality, and the over-the-top dialogues that Bollywood had started moving away from, which we had hoped were a thing of the past. Clearly, that hope was in vain."
