Did Dharmendra refuse to watch Baghban because of Hema Malini’s chemistry with Amitabh Bachchan? Dream Girl reacts to rumour

Hema Malini said that she was apprehensive about playing a mother to grown adults in the film Baghban, but her own mother convinced her to do the film.

Actor Hema Malini‘s career witnessed a resurgence with the film Baghban in 2003, but she revealed in a new interview that she nearly didn’t agree to do it. Hema said that she was apprehensive about doing the film, because she didn’t want to play mother to grown adults. But she eventually gave in at her mother’s insistence.

In an interview with Lehren Retro, Hema was asked if it is true that her husband Dharmendra refuses to watch Baghban to this day because of the chemistry she shared with Amitabh. Hema laughed, and said, “I don’t know about that”. Directed by Ravi Chopra, Baghban also starred Salman Khan, Mahima Chaudhry, Aman Varma and Samir Soni.

Hema described it as a ‘lovely film’, and recalled how particular BR Chopra was about her character, as he had envisioned the entire story. But after being away from films for some time, Hema was unsure about playing a mother on screen. She recalled hearing Ravi Chopra’s narration along with her mother, and her immediate reaction was, “He wants me to play a mother to four grown-ups, how can I do all this?”

But despite Hema’s dismissiveness, her mother insisted that she do the film because she connected with the story. She told Hema that she must do the film, as the role was very nice. Baghban became a big hit, and is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. In the same interview, Hema spoke about her equation with Dharmendra, and their unconventional marriage.

They tied the knot in 1980, when Dharmendra was already married and had four children. Hema and Dharmendra have two daughters, Esha and Ahana Deol. Their family was once again thrust into the limelight recently, after Hema and her two daughters skipped attending the wedding festivities of Dharmendra’s grandson, Karan Deol.
