Singer Daler Mehndi’s wife, Taran, recalled the two months that he spent in jail after being convicted of human trafficking. The ordeal began in 2003, and he was convicted in 2018 and sentenced to two years. His jail sentence was suspended in 2022, and he is currently out on bail. In an interview posted on her own YouTube channel, Taran said that her husband lost the support of close allies during the period, and few from the entertainment industry stood up for him. But, she said, their family was like a rock.

Recalling a visit to jail with her children, she said, “This episode changed a lot of things for us. It shouldn’t have happened. It’s a trauma for all of us. Everybody told me not to take our youngest daughter to Patiala, to meet him in jail. I told them, ‘You don’t even know her equation with her dad’. She had to meet him. Our oldest daughter said that everyone would have to be strong, even though we were all down and out.”

She continued, “This was when he was put behind bars. After we met him, one by one, all of us broke down. But our youngest daughter didn’t shed a single tear. Instead, she asked, ‘Is the bed sheet clean? Is the toilet clean?’ And that’s when Daler ji broke down. Look at the consciousness of this child. She loves her non-veg food, but because she knew that her father wasn’t getting proper meals, she refused to eat at home.”

Taran said that on the day of his appeal judgment, she was in the Gurudwara, when she received a call informing her that her youngest daughter was refusing to go to school. When she asked her why, the child said that she has to get things ready for Daler’s return. Taran said that she drew strength on that uncertain day from her daughter, who was sure that her dad would be released. She also said that the family, including Daler’s brother Mika, was unwavering in its support during this period.

Asked if she felt let down by the industry’s lack of support, she said, “This is an industry. It is not a brotherhood. I don’t think the industry even paid attention to what was happening. This is how the industry operates. There are a few friends, like Suniel Shetty and Ahmed Khan. And there is no one in the industry who holds a grudge against him.”
