Babil Khan gravely affected by comparisons with dad Irrfan Khan, says wife Sutapa Sikdar: ‘Almost depression mein hai’
Sutapa Sikdar said that Babil was under a lot of pressure because of the constant comparisons between him and his late father Irrfan Khan.

Sutapa Sikdar, wife of late actor Irrfan Khan, recently opened up about her son, actor Babil Khan, and said that he is under a lot of pressure because of the constant comparisons between him and his late father. Irrfan passed away in 2020 after a long battle with cancer and Babil, following his father footsteps, made his debut in the movies in 2022 with Anvita Dutt’s film Qala. Sutapa said that Babil is “almost” in depression and is very “vulnerable” because of the comparisons between him and Irrfan.
In a chat with Hindustan Times, Sutapa said, “Babil pe bahut zyada pressure hai aur mujhe yeh thik nahin lagta. (There is a lot of pressure on Babil and I don’t think it is okay.)” She then added, “This pressure should not be there, Irrfan never had that pressure and when you don’t put any pressure on yourself, your individuality comes out.”
Sutapa said that the cause of concern wasn’t just work-related but also the fact that Babil lost his father at a young age. Babil was just 22 when Irrfan passed away. She said, “It’s not only about work but also about losing the father figure, almost depression mein hai (he is in depression, almost). Then this stress and comparison all the time. As a mother, I feel, ‘Please mere bachche ko chor do (Please, let my child be)’. Also, he is very vulnerable and does not have a fighter’s spirit. His father was very strong and so am I, but genetically kahin se to aaya hoga (must have been the genes)…”
Sutapa said that this situation to what Abhishek Bachchan must have gone through as till date, he is constantly compared to his father, veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan. She said, “Like, Abhishek Bachchan did amazing work in I Want to Talk but wahi hai…comparisons with legendary Amitabh Bachchan work against him. I feel Babil is going through a similar ordeal. I just hope he overcomes it soon.”
Earlier this year, Babil had shared a cryptic note about “giving up” on his Instagram stories but deleted it soon after. He followed it up with a post about Irrfan where he wrote about “fighting back.”
Babil will next be seen in Shoojit Sircar’s The Umesh Chronicles.
