Asha Bhosle wonders about spiraling divorce rates, asks Sri Sri Ravi Shankar why having children is becoming a ‘burden’ for women
In a conversation with Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, singer Asha Bhosle questioned why women choose to end marriages.

Legendary singer Asha Bhosle spoke about increasing divorce rates, and said that regardless of any difficulties that she experienced in her married life, she never thought of ending the relationship altogether. In a chat with Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, posted on the spiritual guru’s YouTube channel, the singer said that the idea of love itself has changed over time, and that relationships are losing their sanctity.
She said in Hindi, “I am a 90-year-old woman. I got married, had three kids. I’d take the kids to my mother’s house when things became difficult in my marriage, but I never filed for divorce. But nowadays, every month I hear about divorces. Why is this happening?” Ravi Shankar joked that older generations had her music to turn to in difficult times. He said that people have become more self-centred and brittle these days, and are more likely to take rash decisions.
The singer added, “I’ve spent so many years in the film industry, I’ve seen so many people, but they wouldn’t take drastic decisions like the younger generations these days. They’re falling out of love very easily.” Ravi Shankar said that people often mistake attraction for love, and when attraction fades, they end relationships. “They only think about themselves. It wasn’t like this in our times. All our attention used to be on respecting others, and not hurting their feelings. People have lost this sensitivity,” he said.
Asha said that having children has become a ‘burden’ for women these days. “Not only among the poor, even the middle-class and the rich are hesitant about having kids… I started singing at the age of 10, had three children, I’ve grandchildren and even great-grandchildren. I was working day and night, but I wasn’t alone. I got them educated, married, settled… But people these days feel having kids with only increase their problems.”
Asha Bhosle has been married twice. She first tied the knot with a man named Ganpatrao Bhosle, who was decades older than her. She was unhappy in the relationship, and left with their two children. She was pregnant with their third child at the time. They are said to have separated in 1960; she married RD Burman in 1980. In an interview with Kavita Chhibber, according to Hindustan Times, Asha spoke about her failed first marriage, and said, “I did get married at a very young age to a man who was 20 years older than I was. It was a love marriage and Lata didi did not speak to me for a long time. She disapproved of the alliance. The family was very conservative and they could not handle a singing star for a daughter-in-law.”
She had added, “There was abuse and ill-treatment and I finally was asked to leave when I was expecting my youngest son Anand, and I did go back to my mother, sisters, and brother. I do not blame anyone and have no ill will. I feel if I had not met Mr Bhosle, I would not have had these three amazing children and life turned out okay.”
