As Shah Rukh Khan moves out of Mannat, a look inside SRK’s lavish home and what it will look like after renovations
Inside Shah Rukh Khan's mansion Mannat: Here's how SRK came to find his dream home, how it took him four years to repay loans and what Mannat will look like when the renovations -- lasting approximately two years -- are done.

There are a few addresses in Mumbai who are on the list of every film fan who visits the city — Amitabh Bachchan’s home Jalsa, Salman Khan’s residence at Galaxy apartments, and Shah Rukh Khan’s sea-facing villa Mannat. However, this is going to change as SRK and family shift to a temporary address in Bandra for about two years while his iconic home — a Grade III heritage building — undergoes renovation. SRK has often complained that his house is ‘small’. The comments — delivered in the witty style of Bollywood badshah — have been received with mirth. The actor, however, appearsv to be only half joking as the structure is set to undergo some serious work.
Meanwhile, wife Gauri Khan and their kids, Abram, Suhana and AbRam’s shifting to a new but temporary location in Pali Hill at Mumbai’s Bandra. Here are all the details about how SRK came to find his dream home and bought it, what Mannat looks like from inside now, what are the proposed changes in Shah Rukh’s home and his temporary address.
How Shah Rukh Khan bought Mannat
Shah Rukh Khan’s house Mannat has a built-in area of about 27,000 square-foot. The heritage bungalow was purchased by the actor in 2001. Mannat is located in the posh Bandstand area of Bandra in Mumbai. SRK had purchased the bungalow in 2001 for Rs 13.01 crore. As of December 2024, Mannat’s estimated value was around Rs 200 crore.
Mannat’s original name was ‘Villa Vienna’. SRK bought the heritage bungalow from the ‘Bai Khorshed Bhanu Sanjana Trust’ in 2001. The actor was shooting there for Yes Boss and liked the building so much that he bought it.
In her coffee table book My Life in Design, Gauri Khan, has shared about the couple’s early struggles when they first bought the house. Shah Rukh, who penned the foreword for the book, too recalled how they did not have enough money to furnish Mannat after they bought it as their financial situation was tight.
In 2023, SRK told the media, “We had not too much money. As soon as we mustered up some money, we said we have to buy a bungalow. We managed to buy, which was one thing, but then we had to rebuild it because it was kind of broken. And then we didn’t have money to furnish it.”
As the couple had limited options to get a designer for the house, it was Gauri Khan who took the whole thing in her hand. SRK shared once, “The only person to turn to was Gauri. I said, ‘Why don’t you become the designer of the house?’ So actually, Mannat started like that.”
How the mansion got the name Mannat
After acquiring the property, Shah Rukh reportedly named it Jannat, which means heaven. Soon after he had a lot of success in his career and the house proved lucky for him. This made SRK and the family rename it Mannat, which means prayer.

On occasions such as Eid or Shah Rukh Khan’s birthday, Mannat turns into a big tourist attraction as fans gather outside to get a glimpse of the superstar.
Mannat’s was initially built and owned by…
Mannat was constructed back in 1914. At first, it was built and owned by Nariman A. Dubash. It is classified as a Grade-III heritage property, meaning the original bungalow cannot be modified. Eventually, the actor added a six-storey annexe behind the main structure, known as the Mannat Annexe.
A few other stories around the mansion read that this prominent landmark at Bandra Bandstand is believed to have been built by the Raja of Mandi in the late 19th century, and the M on the bungalow’s facade perhaps stands for Mandi, as shared by Bharat Gothoskar, City Chronicler and Founder of Khaki Heritage Foundation.
But another story claims that the bungalow was either built or acquired by a Parsi gentleman called Maneckji Bottlewala in 1917, and the M probably stands for Maneckji. The bungalow’s design is said to be inspired by Villa La Rotunda, a 16th-century building in the city of Vicenza in Italy, designed by Italian architect Palladio, itself inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, a 1st-century building.
Film shot at Mannat
Did you know that SRK’s bungalow was given out in the 1980s and 90s for film shoots? Films like Mr. India and Tezaab from that era were shot at this bungalow. In fact, Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Yes Boss’s song “Bas itna sa khwab hai” was also shot in front of this mansion.
