Actor Anupam Kher had an awkward interaction on a podcast recently, when he appeared to be upset that the host hadn’t watched his new film, Tanvi the Great before taking his interview. The film released about three weeks earlier. Partially crowd-funded for Rs 50 crore, the film made just around Rs 2 crore at the box office. During the interview, Anupam remarked that the host hadn’t bothered to watch his movie or read his book. When the host tried to explain himself, the actor said the interviewer will not have a reference point as he has not watched the film. Midway during the conversation, he asked the interviewer to open his mouth and aimed a piece of popcorn at him. Later, when the host said that he was bothered by the exchange, Anupam said that he ‘deserves’ to feel bad about it. Most actors/directors demand that their films should be watched before interviews. However, often interviews are often finalised at the last minute, leaving little time for interviewers to do their homework.

The actor-filmmaker appeared on The Longest Interview on the Chalchitra Talks YouTube channel, which has around 3.5 lakh subscribers. Midway through the 70-minute conversation, the host asked, “What has been your learning as a director?” Anupam replied, “I will not talk about this, because you haven’t watched my film.” The host explained that the interview was finalised only the previous evening, and that he flew to Mumbai from Jaipur the morning they shot the interview. Anupam said that he had 20 days to watch the film. “I will not answer this question because you will not know what my reference point is,” he said. But when the host apologised and said that hundreds of thousands of audience members who might understand his reference could be interested, Anupam said, “You don’t have to apologise. I’m not one of those insecure people… I can answer the audience on a different podcast.”

Anupam said that they had been in conversation to set up the interview for a week, which the host denied. “There is no defence in this. You are not ready to admit that you didn’t do your job, but you still want answers from me.” When the host said that he wasn’t in talk with Anupam’s team for a week for the interview, the actor leaned back, picked up a piece of popcorn placed in a bowl on the table between them, and asked the host to open his mouth. Anupam proceeded to aim the piece of popcorn at the host’s mouth; it ricocheted and fell on the floor. Anupam continued, “First of all, you don’t have to apologise. Everyone has a different personality. I don’t postpone what I feel.”

The host said that he’d become ‘conscious’ and that he no longer felt that he was being present for the conversation, after becoming consumed by the thought that he hadn’t done a good job at research. “It is affecting me,” he said, and Anupam replied, “It is affecting you because you deserve to be affected.” He moved on from the conversation by saying that he was just pulling the host’s leg.

A clip of the exchange was shared online on Reddit, where people reacted in the comments section. “He looks so visibly uncomfortable, genuinely feel bad for him,” one person wrote. “He handled it so well. Pyaar se apna point rakha and correct boldiya. It’s on the PR and the manager. Of course as a cinema podcast, he should have watched the film. But PRs often tell you literally last minute that something is happening. Matlab aise 15 min pehle bhi they tell journalists that they have an interview with so and so artiste. For a podcaster, it’s a big opportunity to miss it for whatever reason,” another person commented. A third person wrote, “I watched this interview and it was uneasy for Vaibhav and even me. Anupam was high handed and was a bit hostile in the way he was talking, the tension in the air that he built up like the narcissist in him was visible. He acknowledged that the team had done good research but on the other hand, he did not bother to know about the format of the interview. Vaibhav was going to explain but Anupam cut him off saying nahi nai you carry on. Anupam came with an agenda to promote his movie while the show was not about it at all. His team did not do the job to inform him that this was not a promotional interview, but a general one about his likes, dislikes and his work. For the first time, this longest interview actually did feel LONGEST. Kudos to Vaibhav to handle it well.”

In an earlier interview with Raj Shamani, Anupam said that the movie was crowd-funded by independent financiers.“I called up a few friends of mine in US and in India. We have 10 co-producers on this film. It’s basically crowd-funded. I sent them the synopsis of the film, and none of them have anything to do with films. They are businessmen, they work in banks, they are doctors. They didn’t have to (give me the money). But they said okay. I said I will return the money when the film gets released, but none of them have asked for it… You know something more interesting? All my main four cast members decided not to take money from me till I have it. Arvind Swamy, Jackie Shroff, Pallavi Joshi, Boman Irani, I went to them and said this is what has happened. I said, ‘I will pay you’, and they said, ‘Did we ask for it?’” he said.
