Former model and actor Anu Aggarwal became an overnight sensation after making her debut in the 1990 film Aashiqui. Directed by Mahesh Bhatt, the film broke several box office records and was also lauded for its brilliant marketing campaigns. In a recent interaction, Anu shared how the poster of the film caused traffic jams in Mumbai, even leading to the ever-punctual Amitabh Bachchan arriving late on set.

Speaking to Pinkvilla, Anu opened up about the film’s poster, which created a lot of buzz but didn’t introduce the faces of its lead cast. The poster showed Anu and her co-star Rahul Roy under a coat. When asked if she felt angry at the makers for not showing her face in the poster and introducing her to the audience, especially since it was her debut film, she said, “More than the film’s poster, the close-up of my face was put up in every hoarding of every lane of Mumbai.”

She explained how the frenzy around her posters led to Amitabh Bachchan being late on set. She said, “I remember shooting for a magazine’s cover shoot with Amitabh Bachchan. I was on time but he was 20 minutes late. First thing he did was apologize to me. He said, ‘I am so sorry, mein kya karta your face was there throughout on the road which led to traffic jams.'”

Anu further explained, “So the big poster of just my face was put up everywhere and the tag line on it was, ‘This face can stop a crowd.’ So, my face was already known and before that I was a model.”

In the same interaction, Anu also revealed that despite Aashiqui being a massive hit at the time, the makers didn’t pay her the full amount of her fees. “I haven’t gotten the full fees for Aashiqui till today. I’ve only been paid 60% of the full fees. They still owe me the 40%. It’s okay, I earned a lot. I earned much more in modelling. I became a brand ambassador,” she said.

After being a blockbuster, Aashiqui catapulted into a cult classic. The film became known for its music, which went on to become the best-selling Bollywood soundtrack album of all time.
