Anil Sharma owes a huge part of his directorial career to the Deol family, particularly Sunny Deol. He delivered his biggest hits with Sunny’s popular cross-border romantic action franchise Gadar. But Sharma owes the early days of his career to Sunny’s father Dharmendra, having done four consecutive films with the veteran actor in the late 1980s and the early 1990s.
The poster features a shirtless Dharmendra, flaunting his toned physique and an intense expression, as he holds a gun. Anil Sharma revealed Sher was a spy film, and had Dharmendra in a desi avatar of popular Hollywood spy James Bond. The logline on the poster announced: “To save humanity!” It was an international co-production between India’s RSD International and Thailand’s Alkemal.
“It was spy movie… a James bond kind character for Dharam ji. It was supposed to shot abroad. We shot a few action scenes and a song composed by LP (Laxmikant-Pyarelal) on set in Mumbai. I Still remember @aapkadharam did highly stylish action and lovely comedy scenes. This movie was having a big star cast. Kadar khan wrote dialogue, did mahurat at Hotel Sea Rock before #HUKUMAT release,” Sharma wrote on X.
“But due to some issue of producers, the film got shelved. I was almost a newcomer at that time. Kash ye film ban pati. Bahut hi jabardast and entertainment se bharpur thi script… but “hoye vahi jo ram rach rakha” (I wish that film got made. It was a terrific script and and full of entertainment. But what happens is upto God’s wishes),” added the director.
Before Sher, Anil Sharma had directed only a couple of films, including Bandhan Kuchchey Dhaagon Ka, starring Shashi Kapoor and Zeenat Aman. After Sher got shelved, Sharma and Dharmendra went on to make four action films together — Hukumat, Elaan-E-Jung (1989), Farishtay (1991), and Tahalka (1992).
Sharma then worked with Dharmendra’s elder son Sunny Deol in the 2001 blockbuster Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, followed by Hero: The Love Story of a Spy (2003), making a spy movie with the son years after he couldn’t make one with the father. After working with the younger son, Bobby Deol, in Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo (2004), he reunited all three Deol men in the 2007 hit family drama Apne. He later reunited with Sunny for Singh Saab The Great in 2013 and Gadar 2 in 2023.
