Amitabh Bachchan had to re-dub Agneepath overnight because fans didn’t believe it was his voice: ‘There was mayhem in theatres’
Amitabh Bachchan's Agneepath got him his first National Film Award but the initial response of the audience was quite alarming for the makers.

On the Diwali special episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati, Amitabh Bachchan welcomed the team of Citadel: Honey Bunny, Varun Dhawan and directors of the show Raj & DK. During the show, Amitabh Bachchan surprised his audience as he narrated his famous monologue from Agneepath. He also shared an anecdote from those days and said that he had to re-dub the entire film overnight as fans did not appreciate his new voice modulation for the film. Amitabh Bachchan received his first National Film Award for Best Actor for this film.
During the show, Varun Dhawan expressed his admiration for the veteran star and his performance in Agneepath. He said, “The movie (Agneepath) is still incredible and your character is iconic”, to which Raj & DK added, “You have been a hero for so many generations that even new actors try to capture your style in certain scenes. I tell them only you can truly embody that character.”
Soon, a curious Varun can be heard asking the star, “As an actor, I’d love to know–when you took on the character of Vijay Deenanath Chauhan, what was on your mind? How did you decide on the voice modulation?”
Big B replied, “I will tell you a fact–some things are unplanned. On the first day of shooting, I still hadn’t figured out how to portray him. I was in the makeup room and called Mukul Anand and suggested giving Vijay a distinct, deep voice. He agreed, and that’s how we decided on it. There was a man who used to visit composers Kalyanji-Anandji’s home with a similar heavy tone, so I thought, why not model Vijay’s voice after him? Later, I found out that the man came from an underworld background, which fit the essence of Vijay’s character perfectly.”
Amitabh then recalled how the makers had to make changes to this after the first few shows. “When the movie released, the producer called to say there was mayhem in theatres. Audiences were tearing up seats and telling the sound department, ‘This doesn’t sound like Amitabh; fix the sound system!’ So, to address it, I had to re-dub the whole film in my normal voice. But that initial voice was very impactful,” he said.
Varun then shared a request with the host as he said, “Sir, could you deliver that dialogue for us? The audience is missing that iconic voice.” Amitabh Bachchan then re-enacted the scene and this made everyone give him a standing ovation.
