The question of whether Bollywood icons Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha were ever romantically involved, or are currently, has long been a topic of fascination among fans. While many dismiss this as mere rumour, a significant number still hold onto the belief that there’s truth to it. However, both stars have consistently maintained that they were never romantically involved with each other.
In the lives of both the actors, their respective interviews with actor-talk show host Simi Garewal hold particular significance as both Bachchan and Rekha, who appeared together in many movies, spoke candidly about their relationship, or lack thereof, on her show Rendezvous With Simi Garewal. She herself once reflected on her iconic interview with Amitabh and his wife Jaya Bachchan, where the couple answered some tough questions, including those about their marriage.
“We talked of everything under the sun. His childhood, adolescence, parents, ABCL, his flops, his return, his family, Jaya, the kids, the kind of women he likes, his professional decisions… I think he was completely honest. There are people who, after that interview, said, ‘Amitabh Bachchan is not like that!’ Or ‘He was not telling the truth about Rekha!’ But I believe he gave all of himself in that interview. Anyway, people only believe what they want to believe,” the actor-turned-director reflected.
When asked about his relationship with Rekha, Bachchan told Garewal, “She has been my co-star and colleague. And when we were working together, obviously we met each other. Socially, we have nothing in common. That’s about it. Sometimes we bump into each other at a function, which is, you know, an award function, for example, or at a social gathering. But that’s about it,” News18 reported. Garewal also added that once Jaya Bachchan arrived on set, Amitabh was more at ease and completely himself, further dispelling rumours of any marital discord.
In her highly acclaimed 2004 interview with Rekha, Garewal asked her upfront if she had ever been in love with Amitabh Bachchan. Rekha replied, “Absolutely. Duh, that’s a dumb question. I have yet to come across a single man, woman, child who can help but fall completely, passionately, insanely, desperately, hopelessly in love with him. So why should I be singled out? What do I deny? I’m not in love with him? Of course I am. Duniya bhar ka love aap le lijiyega and add some more – I feel that for that person. Bottomline.”
