The first trailer for director Payal Kapadia’s acclaimed drama, All We Imagine as Light, was unveiled on Thursday, ahead of its much-awaited India release in November. All We Imagine as Light follows the journey of two Kerala nurses in Mumbai, living together, exploring their identity, resilience and understanding what it means to love.

Starring Kani Kusruti and Divya Prabha, All We Imagine as Light won the Grand Prix award at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. It became the first Indian film in decades to be selected to play in the competition section at Cannes.

The trailer introduces the viewers to nurse Prabha (Kusruti), receiving an unexpected gift from her estranged husband, whom she hasn’t spoken to in a year. “How could you marry a total stranger,” asks her younger roommate, Anu, who has a boyfriend in the city. “I don’t think I could,” she says as the trailer tenderly captures the couple finding quiet moments of intimacy across crowded corners of Mumbai. The only problem? Her parents are looking to get her married to someone else.

“Some people call this the city of dreams. I think this is a city of illusions,” says a character about Mumbai, while another adds, “You have to believe the illusion, or else you will go made,” as the two nurses, along with Chhaya Kadam’s character, head to a beach town, which finally gives them a space to breathe and be.
