Dembele had powered PSG to the Champions League title last season and the moment marks a remarkable turnaround in the 28-year-old forward’s career, which had steemingly stalled at Barcelona between 2017 and 2023 after a big money move from Borussia Dortmund.
Spain and Barcelona great Aitana Bonmati won the women’s Ballon d’Or. She became just the third player after Lionel Messi and Michelle Platini to have won it three consecutive times. The 28-year-old Dembele was inspirational in leading PSG to its first Champions League title and is among a remarkable nine PSG players vying for the men’s award. PSG’s Vitinha finished third in the list.

Started in the year 1956, the Ballon d’Or is the highest individual prize in world football and for the first time ever, the 2025 tournament will feature a star-studded awards ceremony with an equal number of accolades for both men’s and women’s football. Awards will be presented to the best male and female player, young player, goalkeeper, top scorer, and coach. A new Socrates Award will also be introduced to honor humanitarian efforts.
