‘All We Imagine As Light didn’t seem Indian’, reasons FFI President as he defends Laapataa Ladies selection for Oscars 2025
Days after Laapataa Ladies was announced as India's official entry for Oscars, the FFI President reveals the reason behind ignoring All We Imagine As Light, Attam, and other 29 films.

While the announcement of Laapataa Ladies being India’s official entry for Oscars took the makers of the film by surprise, there were many others who raised eyebrows and demanded an explanation behind choosing the Kiran Rao directorial film, over films like National Award-winning film Aattam, and Grand Prix winner All We Imgaine As Light. After severe backlash, and outrage online, the FFI has finally reacted to the situation.
In a conversation with ETimes, Film Federation of India (FFI) President Ravi Kottakara explained it was jury’s collective decision to send Laapataa Ladies as India’s official entry to Oscars. He shared the jury came to this decision after coming to the conclusion that Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light is like a foreign film and not Indian.
He further revealed, there were about seven films out of 29 which were in the list. The decision to choose one of them was quite a task and it took them around four hours before selecting the final film. Stressing that all of these films were based on women, the FFI President also revealed that there was a big tussle over Ullozhuku and Srikanth.
Further explaining the reason behind their final choice, Ravi Kottakara added when the Jury watched Laapataa Ladies, they were convinced that the film represented the plight of the Indian women. He claimed the plot around swapping of brides due to their ghoonghat in a train is something that happens only in India.
Laapataa Ladies was among 29 films that were submitted to the FFI for Oscars 2025. The film, starring Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta and Sparsh Shrivastav, released in theatres on March 1. The film marked the return of Kiran Rao on director’s chair after her last venture Dhobhi Ghat (2010). The other films that were submitted included Animal, Article 370, and Attam, among others. After the official announcement, both Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan Productions expressed their happiness and thanked their audience for their support.
