Aishwarya Rai has been attending the Cannes Film Festival since 2002 and has attended almost all the editions of the festival since then. After her first appearance at Cannes in 2002 won hearts, Aishwarya attended the festival in 2003 as well but this time, her looks were badly criticised. In a recent interview, designer Neeta Lulla opened up about that year and recalled how she had sent 47 outfits with Aishwarya for different occasions but something went wrong there.

Neeta, in a chat with Bollywood Hungama, recalled that Aishwarya was not keeping well at this time as she had “fractured her foot.” The outfits that she was photographed in, especially the neon green saree, was dissed by the fashion police of the time. “There were some 47 outfits that went with her for the whole festival. Day wear, afternoon wear, evening wear, red carpet wear. Somewhere, I guess what happened was possibly time, possibly because of different collaborations, jewellery had to be changed. I really don’t know what happened there,” she said.

Neeta said that she was very upset at the time but Aishwarya stood by her through it all. “Anybody is going to be upset with the kind of comments that a lot of fellow designers and media put out without knowing what exactly happened, which even till date I don’t know… All I knew was there were front page and double page features that were happening about how bad a designer I was or whatever but anyway, I guess her wearing my outfit and trusting me with so many more post that only spoke the truth about it,” she said.

Neeta said that the learning she, and possibly a lot of other designers, got from this was “all the stylists go with their designers to the Cannes Film Festival to see that no more of this happens ever.”

Neeta and Aishwarya have had a long association in the movies. She even designed the kanjeevaram saree for Aishwarya’s wedding with Abhishek Bachchan in 2007.
