Aamir Khan was just a few films old when he appeared in director Indra Kumar’s Dil. With the film, Amir witnessed success for the first time since his debut in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. In a recent interview, Indra spoke about the 1990 hit, which was very critical for his and Aamir’s careers. Dil was Indra’s first film as a director.

In a chat with Siddharth Kannan, Indra claimed that “Aamir had eight flops in a row after Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak.” He continued, “What could he do? He was working sincerely. A film’s success is in the hands of a director, not the actor. What happens if a film doesn’t work? If Dil hadn’t worked, Aamir and me, both of us wouldn’t have had careers.” Indra said that Aamir was always talented, he “just needed a good opportunity.” “He was blessed with Dil and the way his career took off from there, he never looked back,” he said.

Aamir and Indra worked together in two other films, Ishq and Mann, as well. Talking about Mann, which also starred Manisha Koirala and Anil Kapoor, Indra said that he had a feeling that there was something amiss about the film. At one point during production, even Aamir confessed that he wasn’t confident in what they were making. “One day, Aamir told me on the set, ‘Indu yaar yeh picture mujhe kahin aur jaate hue dikh rahi hai (Indu, I can see that this film is going in some other direction)’. He said that he was feeling uneasy. I told him that I have discussed this already. We have to be confident,” he recalled.

Mann was a flop at the box office and did not receive much love from the audience. Indra was then asked if Aamir was “distracted” on the set of Mann because of his divorce with ex-wife Reena Dutta. Indra said that this was “a lie” and Aamir was nothing but a sincere professional on set. “When Aamir comes to work, he doesn’t carry any baggage. One of his finest performances is in Mann. If anyone has failed in that movie, it’s me, not Aamir,” he said.

Aamir and Indra have not worked together since Mann.
