G Ranganathan, a 75-year-old pharmaceuticals company owner, was arrested for producing and selling a contaminated cough syrup that caused the deaths of children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. This sparked a wider probe into substandard medicines. Ranganathan was taken into custody in Kancheepuram after being arrested from his Chennai residence.
