Every year, over 1.5 million candidates appear for engineering entrance exams in India, such as JEE Main. Nearly 1.2 million specifically for top competitive examinations like JEE Main and JEE Advanced. The key competition among these aspirants centres on admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), especially for coveted branches such as Mechanical Engineering, which continues to be a traditional favourite despite the rising popularity of Computer Science.
Mechanical Engineering, because of its broad scope in areas like core engineering, design, energy systems, robotics, thermal sciences, and manufacturing, remains a preferred stream at not just IITs but also many prestigious non-IIT institutes recognised by recent NIRF rankings.
Here’s a list of the top 10 non-IIT institutes for BTech in Mechanical Engineering as per NIRF Rankings 2024–
Institute | Where is it located? |
National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli | Tamil Nadu |
Vellore Institute of Technology | Tamil Nadu |
Jadavpur University | West Bengal |
SRM Institute of Science and Technology | Tamil Nadu |
Anna University (CEG) | Tamil Nadu |
National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal | Karnataka |
