The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NIT-K), formerly known as Surathkal, saw a decline in its National Institution Framework Category (NIRF) ranking for 2024. In this year's rankings, it has secured 17th position with a score of 64.27. In overall rankings, the institute is now placed at 46th position from last year's 38. Under the research category, it has seen a decline by a point and is at 42th position. NITK's performance in other NIRF categories also declined in 2023. In the engineering category, the Institute dropped from the top 10 position in 2022 and was placed at the 12 spot. Founded in 1960 as Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC), the institution was upgraded to the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NIT-K) in 2002. NITK did not secure a spot in the QS World University Rankings or Times Higher Education Rankings for 2024. It was 2021, when it ranked 40 and then in 2022 it did not rank and then NIRF 2023, it managed to secure 41. The Institute's ranking was decreased by more than 10 points. Additionally, its scores also dropped by 1.27 points, from 56.74 in 2022 to 55.47 in 2023. While in 2024, the Institute's TLR is 74.65, followed by 49.04 RPC, 78.44 GO, 62.31 OI and 52.37 perception. With various courses since inspection, like chemical engineering, chemistry civil engineering, computer science and engineering electrical and electronics engineering, electronics and communication engineering information technology, mathematical and computational sciences the Institute also offers unique courses.
