JEE Main Answer Key 2025 January Session Live Updates: Here’s why start-ups return to campuses amid students’ increased interest

Until last year, fewer start-ups were found in the placement sheet of IITs because students complained that while these companies were offering lucrative jobs, they were failing to convert the offer letter into a joining date. However, the trend is changing this year, and many now believe that the start-up ecosystem in India is a viable alternative this time with well-kept promises.

“It is common for young start-ups to delay the joining letter as their financial health is dependent on fundraising, which is dynamic and unpredictable. One cannot explicitly blame them for such mishaps as this is how things work in markets. However, IITs prioritise the interests of the students and want to ensure that such instances are avoided, leading to sterner policies for company enrollment in campus placements,” Prof Lakshmi Narayan Ramasubramanian, assistant professor at IIT Delhi told indianexpress.com.

“Students prefer being a part of start-ups now because of more opportunities, and faster growth rate,” said Prof Balasubramanian Malayappan.

JEE Main Answer Key 2025 January Session Live Updates: Over 13% students opted for higher studies over placements in 2023 : IIT Delhi exit survey

Not all students of IIT Delhi are availing on-campus placement services, the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT D) has revealed through an exit survey commissioned by the institute amongst the students who graduated in August 2024.

In this exit survey, 1411 (53.1 per cent) students confirmed that they have received a job offer. On the other hand, 224 (8.4 per cent) students responded that they were self-employed, whereas 45 (1.7 per cent) students informed that they are working for a start-up and 66 (2.5 per cent) students were involved in entrepreneurship.

There are several students who have either started pursuing further studies, or are in the process of preparing for those. As per the exit survey, 359 (13.5 per cent) IIT Delhi students responded that they are going for higher studies, 47 (1.8 per cent) PhD students informed that they are waiting for a post-doctoral research opportunity or for a faculty position. Similarly, 321 (~ 12.1 per cent) students informed that they are preparing for different examinations, for example, civil services, engineering services, and examinations required for different government jobs.

JEE Main Answer Key 2025 January Session Live Updates: IITs go discreet on students’ placement data this year, here’s why

ndian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have decided to keep mum on their placement data. The annual on-campus process started on December 1. However, only IIT Kanpur, Roorkee, BHU, and Kharagpur have shared some information, while others like IIT-Delhi, Madras, Guwahati, and Mandi have decided to either release one update around December 15 or a final update, after session 1 ends in December.

The reason for not revealing the information is the betterment of students, IIT professors revealed. “All institutes, during the recent All IITs’ Placement Committee (AIPC) meeting, discussed not releasing a daily update of the on-campus placements. AIPC has suggested IITs instead release a weekly or fortnightly update. This has been proposed keeping in mind that daily updates can have a negative impact on the mental health of those students who have not been placed yet. We want to ensure that these media reports do not add to the pressure on IITians,” Professor Kaushik Pal, AIPC convenor, told indianexpress.com.

JEE Main Answer Key 2025 January Session Live Updates: Drop in student numbers impact Kota’s coaching, hostel industry

Business has slowed down for coaching centres and hostels in Kota following negative publicity over student suicides, new guidelines regulating coaching centres and the expansion of coaching brands to other cities, according to industry stakeholders.

The number of students in Kota has fallen to 85,000 to 1 lakh this year from the usual 2 to 2.5 lakh, reducing the annual revenue to Rs 3,500 crore from Rs 6,500 to 7,000 crore, they said.

Despite the setback, stakeholders remain optimistic about the credibility of the Kota coaching model and its environment, that is absent in other cities.

Kota’s educational system and environment are unmatched and will attract students back next session, which will compensate for the decline, Govindram Mittal, Zonal Chairperson, United Council of Rajasthan Industries said. He said that industrialists are also looking at alternative opportunities, with plans to establish Information Technology (IT) hubs in the city, modelled after Bengaluru.

JEE Main Answer Key 2025 January Session Live Updates: How does new tie-breaking rules impact JEE 2025 aspirants?

– Increased focus on Mathematics: The subject mathematics has always been the core for JEE. The latest revision further puts emphasis on the importance. Students must make more priority towards Mathematics preparation with a view of getting an upper hand in tie-breaking situations.

– Well-rounded preparations through all subjects: While Mathematics is foremost, Physics and Chemistry are also crucially important. Candidates need to prepare well in all three subjects to not lose their rank in case of a tie for the same score.

Age bias: Older students will now benefit slightly in the event that all subject scores result in a tie. This criterion would be insignificant for most candidates but does stress that rank needs to be earned through high marks rather than merely on age.

– Clarity and simplicity: The new system is straightforward. It puts a lot of emphasis on marks scored in subjects. Clarity brings clarity about the tie-breaker in ranking and reduces uncertainty upon the declaration of the results.

The new tie-breaking criteria for JEE 2025 simplified the process but concentrated on subject-wise performance, especially Mathematics. It is a must to prepare each of the three subjects well and aim for high scores. Students will be able to plan much better if they understand these changes early.

JEE Main Answer Key 2025 January Session Live Updates: Effect of new tie-breaking rules on JEE 2025 aspirants

The tie-breaking criteria are applied when students score the same marks in JEE Main or Advanced. Since rank decides the college admissions and seat allotments, tie needs to be broken to establish fairness. The National Testing Agency (NTA), which administers JEE Main, updates these criteria quite often to adapt to the changing competitive scenario.

What are the new rules?

In JEE 2025, the procedure of resolving ties has been made easier but also sharper in focus on some academic areas. Given below is the new ranking order for tie-breaking

– Mathematics marks: The candidates having marks more than the other will get a higher rank.

– Physics marks: If even this doesn’t break the tie, then the candidate who scores better in Physics will get a better rank.

– Chemistry marks: In case of a tie, candidates with higher marks in Chemistry will be considered more desirable.

– Age factor: If the above criterion don’t break the tie, older candidates will get a better rank.

JEE Main Answer Key 2025 January Session Live Updates: Why have math and computer science become so popular?

Given the rapid growth of technology-driven industries, students are increasingly opting for programmes that align with emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, data science and machine learning, explained Sachin Jain, country manager, Educational Testing Service (ETS) India and South Asia.

“Even according to the TOEFL (ETS conducts this standardised test to measure language ability) insights data, Computing and Information Technology has consistently been a top choice among Indian test-takers in recent years, surpassing conventional engineering preferences. This change is primarily driven by factors such as higher employability and flexibility in career options. Computer science and mathematics provide pathways to lucrative careers in high-demand industries such as information technology, software development, and analytics,” he said.

Dr Sridevi Sarma, vice dean for Graduate Education and Lifelong Learning at Johns Hopkins University, said engineering is not losing popularity in absolute terms, it is evolving. “Engineering now interacts with and indeed is transforming fields once thought of as not amenable to ‘quantitative’ analysis and description. This includes the interaction with biology, medicine, and healthcare…that are all being transformed by data science, AI, machine learning, and the like,” she said.

Foreign education consultants also attribute these shifting job market demands to the “explosive growth” in fields like artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and cybersecurity. Sachin said, “With the rapid growth of AI and related technologies, the computer science market is expanding significantly to include industries wherever technology has been able to make an impact. Moreover, these disciplines open career opportunities in a range of sectors, from finance to healthcare, unlike traditional engineering fields that can often lead to fixed career pathways.”

The integration of AI into core engineering fields like mechanical and electrical is reshaping modern engineering. The job trend has shifted to the global market, especially in bigger countries like the US and the UK.

JEE Main Answer Key 2025 January Session Live Updates: Why Indian students in US prefer Maths/ Computer Science over Engineering

Engineering is no longer the top choice of Indian students flocking to the United States for higher education. This is revealed in the latest Open Doors report, an annual survey examining international student exchange activity in the US.

While engineering continues to dominate as the most popular field, this has seen a dip in recent years. Going by the data, in 2023-24, about 24.5 per cent Indians in the US pursued engineering, which is nearly a 5 per cent drop of 29.6 per cent in 2021-22. Meanwhile, maths or computer science are the most popular fields drawing Indians, with 42.9 per cent pursuing these in 2023-24.

JEE Main Answer Key 2025 January Session Live Updates: Why are IIT placements falling? Students look for higher education, civil services

In an indication of the changing hiring trends from the Indian Institutes of Technology, at least four older IITs have seen a decline in their campus placement percentages in recent years, even as surveys indicate the number of students getting jobs independently may be on the rise.

The trends, based on data obtained by The Indian Express, come against the backdrop of a shifting tech landscape, global economic uncertainties, and an increasing number of IIT graduates competing in a dynamic job market.

Five of the seven first-generation IITs responded to The Indian Express’s request under the RTI Act for placement data spanning six years, from 2018-19 to 2023-24. IIT Madras and IIT Guwahati did not share details and instead referred to their annual reports.

IIT Bombay provided data only for 2022-23 and 2023-24, showing a drop from 82 per cent to 75 per cent. While IIT Guwahati’s placement percentage for 2023-24 (71 per cent) is higher than the pre-pandemic level of 2018-19 (67 per cent), it is seven percentage points lower than the previous year, 2022-23 (78 per cent).

JEE Main Answer Key 2025 January Session Live Updates: Life at IIT Bombay is a perfect blend of excitement and chaos, says Manas Gupta

Choosing IIT Bombay and the Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Sciences Department was a difficult decision. I had to weigh the pros and cons of opting for an older IIT with a lower branch versus a newer IIT with a top branch. In the end, I chose IIT Bombay, and it’s a decision I don’t regret.

Life at IIT Bombay is a whirlwind of experiences. From adjusting to hostel life to managing academics and extracurricular activities, every day is a new challenge. A typical day here starts at 8 am as we have early morning classes. Lab works occupy most of our day, from morning to evening. Then I try to give about two hours to some sports, followed by dinner and some rest. To manage the load of studies, I dedicate about a couple of hours daily on it. Along with this, I have engaged myself with some clubs and events management teams which also require some time of work. In between, chit-chatting with friends and phone calls with family serve as stress-buster.
