Established in 1959, IIT Kanpur along with other top IITs of the country is a pioneer in engineering, research, and innovation. The Institute is a dream for many JEE aspirants. The Institute has been an alma mater for alumni like Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy to Indigo Airlines co-founder Rakesh Gangwal.
In 2024, under the NIRF Rankings, released annually by the Ministry of Education, IIT Kanpur ranked 5 under the overall category, followed by fourth spot under engineering, seventh in research and 29th in management.
Lately, the Institute was also given a donation of Rs 4.2 crore by the Class of 1980. The donation was announced during their 45th-year reunion held between March 2 and 4. As many as 63 alumni were present during the reunion.

IIT Kanpur maintained a consistent overall ranking of 5 from 2021 to 2024, except for 2020, when it was ranked 6. The institute has consistently held the 4th position in the engineering category from 2020 to 2024.
IIT Kanpur has seen a point decline in research, moving from 6 in 2021–2023 to 7 in 2024. It has maintained its strong position in engineering while improving in research and management rankings. The decline in management rankings is particularly concerning for the Institute, showing a significant downtrend from 16 in 2020 to 29 in 2024.
Meanwhile, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) has filed 152 Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in 2024. This milestone of the highest number of IPRs filed in a single year sees the institute sustain the increasing momentum for the fourth consecutive year, an Institute statement issued in this regard said.
With a total of 1200 IPRs filed to date, IIT Kanpur has also maintained its exceptional licensing rate to industry partners with around 12.91 per cent achieved in 2024, it added. The 152 IPR filings include 124 patents, 10 design registrations, two copyrights, and six trademark applications. The institute also expanded its global presence by filing seven US patents, two Chinese patents and one European patent.
IIT Kanpur also received the STEM Impact Awards 2024 for its impactful technology transfer activities. This marks the third time the institute has been recognised for the STEM Impact award, this year the award was given for the technology transfer of ‘Haptic Smart Watch for Blind & Visually Impaired,’ which has led to significant socio-economic impact.
