The National Testing Agency (NTA) has revised the tie-breaking rules for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2025. From this year onwards, age criteria has been removed for the calculation of tie-breaking. NTA released the detailed JEE Main 2025 guidelines on Monday night (October 28). Along with that, NTA also commenced the registration process for JEE Main on October 28, which will conclude on November 22. Changes in JEE Main tie-breaking policy Earlier, the tie between candidates obtaining equal total NTA scores in Paper 1: B.E./BTech was to be resolved in the following manner in descending order: i. NTA score in Mathematics, followed by ii. NTA score in Physics, followed by iii. NTA score in Chemistry, followed by iv. Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in all the subjects in the Test, followed by v. Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Mathematics in the Test, followed by vi. Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Physics in the Test, followed by vii. Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Chemistry in the Test followed by viii. If there is a tie even after this, candidates will be assigned the same rank. However, now while the criteria till the seventh step will remain the same, the criteria of 'older in age' and 'application number in ascending order' has been removed. As per the revised guidelines, if there is a tie even till the seventh criteria then candidates will be assigned the same rank. Other changes This time another change that has been implemented are revised guidelines for the JEE Main 2025 exam for candidates categorised as Persons with Disabilities (PwD) and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD). “The word ‘extra time or additional time’ that is being currently used should be changed to ‘compensatory time’ and the same should not be less than 20 minutes per hour of the examination for persons who are allowed the use of scribe/reader/lab assistant. All the candidates with benchmark disabilities who are eligible for availing the facility of scribe in terms of guidelines IV may be allowed additional time of a minimum of one hour for an examination of three hours whether they use the facility of scribe or not,” read the notification. In case the duration of the examination is less than an hour, then the duration of the additional time should be allowed on a pro-rata basis, and additional time should not be less than 5 minutes and should be in multiples of 5. Another change is the website domain this year too. Last year, NTA had shifted from the old JEE website — jeemain.nta.nic.in — to a new JEE Main website — jeemain.nta.ac.in. However, the agency has once again shifted to the old JEE website — jeemain.nta.nic.in — this year.
