Overlooked from India’s T20I set-up for a year after he was part of the World Cup-winning squad, Yashasvi Jaiswal made a statement hundred in only his second game back for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy during a tall chase against Haryana in Pune.

Opening the batting in a 235-run chase in the Super League stage, Jaiswal waltzed through the gears to rack up a 48-ball hundred to ease Mumbai’s innings. The century marked his fourth hundred in 120 T20 games in professional cricket and his maiden century for Mumbai in the SMAT. He had previously slammed a century for India against Nepal and cracked two tons for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL.

Despite carving shots all around the ground at the DY Patil Academy, Jaiswal only smoked one six in his knock that ended soon after he reached his ton. The swashbuckling left-hander smeared 16 fours to pummel Mumbai past the target in only 17.3 overs, marking the second-highest chase in the tournament’s history.

The 23-year-old, who has already cemented himself as opening mainstay in India’s Test squad, Jaiswal’s chances have been limited in the white-ball set-up. A member of the 2024 T20 World Cup-winning squad where he was the back-up opener to stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Jaiswal has not featured in a T20I for 15 months since his last in Sri Lanka in July last year.

Andhra overpower Punjab

Andhra, which lost the previous game against Madhya Pradesh, made a stellar comeback against Punjab. The all-powerful Punjab batting line-up, didn’t have any batsman who had a fifty to his name, but four of them had scores in the 40s as their aggressive intent carried them to a total of 205/5. Anmolpreet Singh’s 47 was the highest score. Chasing a steep total, Andhra didn’t get off to the best of starts, losing openers Ashwin Hebbar and KS Bharat in the first over. And when Pyla Avinash fell as the fifth wicket in the 9th over with just 56 on board, a comprehensive win looked on the cards for Punjab. However, M Hemanth Reddy launched a stunning assault, scoring an unbeaten 109 off 53 deliveries in an innings that included 11 boundaries and 7 sixes. He found able support from SDNV Prasad who remained not out on 53 as Andhra coasted home with one delivery to spare.

Jharkhand win by 1 run

Needing a run to level the scores and take the game to the Super Over, Aniket Verma fell short as Jharkhand won a thriller against Madhya Pradesh by one run to remain on top of the group. Chasing 182 for win, Harsh Gawli and Harpreet Singh led the charge for MP as they were placed at 140 in the 16th over. But the dismissal of Gawli gave Jharkhand an opening from where their bowlers stepped up to defend the total. Rajat Patidar struggled to find tempo as he made 16 off 14 before being dismissed in the 20th over 8 runs needed. Earlier, Ishan Kishan top-scored with 63 off 30 with cameos from other Jharkhand batsmen taking them to 181/9.

Hyderabad down Rajasthan

After outplaying Mumbai in the previous fixture, Hyderabad made it two out of two as they defeated Rajasthan by six wickets and 17 deliveries to spare to remain top of Group B. Batting first, Rajasthan made 178/9 with Mahipal Lomror top-scoring with 48. Chasing a total that looked below par, Hyderabad made light work of it with Tanmay Agarwal top-scoring with 73 off 41. Rahul Buddhi chipped in with 55.
