The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras will soon conduct the screening test for the first ever international IIT. The selection process for the new campus will include a screening test (which is an aptitude test, covering mathematics, science, English and analytical ability), and interviews with faculty.
From eligibility of the screening test to tuition fee of the new campus, here are some of the frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the IIT Zanzibar campus:
For the BS programme, the candidate must have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) in the last 3 years, i.e. those who have completed the qualifying exam prior to 2020 are not eligible.
For the MTech programme, there is no age limit as such. Anyone who meets the minimum eligibility criteria in terms of educational qualification can apply.
It is expected that candidates have basic proficiency in English.
For the BS programme, the candidate should have passed one of the following exams:
Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education (Form VI) with 3 principal passes in natural sciences.
• Final examination of the 10+2 system or two-year Pre-University, conducted by any recognised Central/ Indian State Board (CBSE etc.)
• General Certificate Education (GCE) Examination (London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.
• High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate office, Geneva.
• Any Public School/Board/University examination in India or in any foreign country recognised as equivalent to 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
For the MTech programme, the candidate should have passed one of the following exams:
• 4-year Bachelor's degree with specialisation in Engineering / Technology.
• Master's degree in Science (if the candidate has a 3-year UG degree)
Candidates applying to the Zanzibar programmes will have to appear in the screening test, i.e. IITMZST 2023. For both BS and MTech programmes, the test will be of two hours duration.
As per the official schedule, the test for BS programme will be held on September 03 (Sunday), 2023 during 2-4 pm IST.
The test for MTech will be held on August 20 (Sunday), 2023, from 2-4 pm IST.
The selection of candidates for admission to the IIT Zanzibar involves a three-stage process:
In stage 1, all the applications are assessed on the basis of the information provided by the applicant, such as previous academic performance, and curricular or co-curricular achievements. No candidate will be eliminated in this round unless his/her application is incomplete or the candidate does not meet the minimum eligibility criteria. Stage 1 (assessment of applications) will carry 20 marks.
In Stage 2, all candidates whose applications are found to be complete are eligible to appear for the screening test (IITMZST 2023). Candidates shortlisted based on their performance in stage 1 and stage 2, will appear in an interview which constitutes stage 3. The list of the candidates shortlisted for interview, will be uploaded
on the website; candidates will also be intimated by email. Stage 2 (online screening test) and stage 3 (online interview) will carry 40 marks each.
Yes, the screening test will be a computer-based test (CBT) held online separately for BS and MTech programmes.
The question paper will be in English. The IITMZST 2023 is of two hours duration and consists of objective type multiple choice questions (MCQs), multiple select questions (MSQs) and numerical answer type questions (NAT) for 40 marks, administered through computer.
The admit card for IITMZST 2023 will tentatively release in the third week of August 2023.

The screening test for Bachelors students will be conducted on September 3 (2-4 pm), and the interviews will be scheduled between September 10 - September 15, 2023. The results of the interview round will be released on September 20.
The screening test for Masters students will be conducted on August 20 (2-4 pm), and the interviews will be scheduled between August 27 - August 30. The results of the interview round will be released on September 5.
The annual tuition fee is $12,000 for BS students and $4,000 for MTech students. Living expenses will be extra.
