In the past few years, IT sector had the majority of the share in placement of every batch. (Representative image. File) The Indian School of Mines was converted to IIT Dhanbad in 2016. Since then, the institute has seen several ups and downs in placements. In 2019-20, a total of 756 students participated and 537 (71.03 per cent) got placed. This number increased in 2020-21 when the total number of participating students increased to 784 and a total of 555 (UG – four years) students were placed.
However, in terms of placement percentage, there was a decline from 71.03 to 71 per cent.

The placement percentage increased drastically to 88 per cent in 2021-22, as the number of placed students also increased to 716, out of 811 students who participated in that academic year’s placement season from the UG – four years programmes.
However, this number declined to 85.53 per cent in the 2022-23 batch as 662 students were placed out of 774 students.

Interestingly, in all years since 2019, IT sector had the majority of the share in placement of every batch. In 2019-20, IT sector had 28.3 per cent share, which increased to 32 per cent in 2020-21. However, it declined to 23 per cent in 2021-22 but once again increased to 26 per cent in the recent season.
A close second in terms of sector wise placement spread is of core sector which has 25 per cent in 2020-21, 14 per cent in 2021-22 and 24 per cent in 2022-23. However, in 2019-20, it was finance sector which was the second most popular sector with 18.87 per cent share.
IIT Dhanbad is a public technical university that was originally established by British Indian Government on the lines of the Royal School of Mines – London, and was formally inaugurated on 9 December 1926 by Lord Irwin, the then Viceroy of India.
