The proposal seeks to enhance students' performance and readiness for competitive exams like JEE, NEET, and others (Representative image/ file)The Board of Intermediate Education, Andhra Pradesh (BIE AP) proposes to remove intermediate first year public exams and conduct only second year exams to reduce exam pressure on students and to achieve equivalence with other boards, including CBSE and other state boards, which do not have board exams for Class 11.
The Board has proposed multiple educational reforms considering the suggestions and recommendations of students, parents, educators, and other stakeholders.
Most of the colleges and universities consider only Class 12 board exams as qualifying criteria for admissions, it added saying that inter first year exams results are not taken into consideration.
As per BIE AP, no revisions were made to the AP Inter syllabus for the last few years, therefore, the need to bring in a revision of syllabus and text books. A total of 14 committees were constituted for the syllabus revision plan.
It is also proposed to make a second language subject as elective and introduce additional subject to provide more options to the students.
BIE also proposes to realign the subject-wise total marks and weightage between theory exams and internal/practical exams as per the CBSE pattern. Also, it is proposed to introduce one-mark questions in the form of multiplechoice questions (MCQs), fill-in-the-blanks, and one-word answers in the board examination. The weightage of Essay type questions will also be reduced from eight marks to five-six marks.
This, the proposed guidelines say, will alleviate the pressure of board exams on students enabling students to concentrate on building a strong conceptual foundation in Inter 1 year which are crucial for the advanced topics in the 2nd year. The proposal seeks to enhance students’ performance and readiness for competitive exams like JEE, NEET, and others.
Announcing the proposals, BIEAP says, the inter 1st year exam will be conducted internally by the junior colleges based on the syllabus and blueprint given by the BIE, while the AP Inter 2nd year board examinations will be conducted by BIE based on Inter 2nd year syllabus.
Suggestions and feedback on the proposed modalities can be sent by the public, students, parents and academicians by January 26 on the email id at biereforms@gmail.com. The modalities of the proposed reforms including the subject-wise revised syllabus are being uploaded on BIE website: bieap.gov.in.
