Maharaja’s College, a prominent government autonomous college in Kerala’s Ernakulam, was shut down on Thursday following a murder attempt on a student belonging to the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the CPI(M).

SFI college unit secretary Nazar Abdul Rahman was stabbed by a group of students belonging to Fraternity Movement, the student wing of the Welfare Party floated by the Jamaat-e-Islami, and the Kerala Students Union (KSU), the student wing of Congress, on Wednesday night, the police said. A case was registered against 19 people and a student, Abdul Malick, was named as the first accused.

The attacks took place in the backdrop of the tension prevailing at the college campus for the last month after the college union election.

State Higher Education Minister R Bindu said the incident was serious and that college authorities had been directed to ensure that peace prevailed on campus. An all-party meeting would be held next Wednesday to decide on reopening the college, the minister added.

In July 2018, SFI leader Abhimanyu was stabbed to death at the college by activists of Campus Front, the student wing of the Popular Front of India, which was banned in 2022.
