Yash Tomar (19), the son of a timber businessman from Uttar Pradesh who was found dead on the outskirts of Gandhidham town in Kutch on November 11, was kidnapped and bludgeoned to death by one of his former neighbours to earn quick money through ransom, Kutch (East) police said on Tuesday.

The neighbour, Rajendrakumar alias Raju Kalariya (59), and his friend Kishan Sinch (40), have been arrested, the police stated. While Kalariya is a resident of Antarjal on the outskirts of Gandhidham, Sinch is a resident of Vavazoda Campnagar in the town.

When contacted, Kutch (West) SP Sagar Bagmar said, “Till around five years ago, Kalariya and the Tomars used to live in the same residential society. However, Kalariya fell on hard times and had to wind up his transport business. He knew that the Tomars were a well-to-do family. To overcome his financial hardships, Kalariya hatched a conspiracy to kidnap the businessman’s son and then murdered him.”

Yash was the son of Sanjivkumar Tomar, a native of Baghpat district in UP. The family stayed at Meghpar Borichi village on the outskirts of Gandhidham town.

Yash had gone missing after leaving for pharmacy college in Adipur on November 6. When his mother called him in the evening, a man at the other hand told her to deliver Rs.1.25 crore in Mumbai on November 11, else Yash will be murdered. Though the mother alerted police the same day, Yash’s body was recovered from a trench on the outskirts of Gandhidham on November 11.

The SP said that Kalariya, who had started a business of selling seat covers in vehicles, was aware of the route Yash took to reach college. “Kalariya waited for him near Tomar’s residence. (When Yash left home), he stopped him and asked for a lift to his place of work, stating that his scooter had developed a snag. As soon as they reached an isolated place, Yash realised that something was amiss and he shared a four-second video on SnapChat, captioning it ‘fans gaya’ (I am trapped),” Bagmar said.

“But before he could do anything, Kalariya’s friend hit him in head with a pipe. Yash fell unconscious and the two strangled him with a rope before burying his body in a trench Kalariya had got dug around 40 days ago,” he added. The SP said Kalariay answered Yash’s mother’s call on his cellphone and demanded Rs.1.25 crore as ransom.

“He was under the impression that no one would be able locate Yash’s body. His plan was to press the family to pay the ransom but he abandoned his plans after police managed to locate Yash’s body on the basis of the video he had shared before he was murdered,” Bagmar added.
