Why lifestyle modifications can provide new hope for prediabetic Indians: study

A study recently published in the Journal of Diabetes Research has shown that integrated lifestyle modification with a multidisciplinary approach can bring a new hope for prediabetic Indians.

The study was conducted by a team of doctors at Pune-based Freedom From Diabetes Institute. The team was led by Dr. Pramod Tripathi. Data for this study was from 427 patients with prediabetes who were enrolled in the 1-year online integrated ILI programme. Participants engaged in the study between March 2020 and May 2023 from 89 cities in India.

The data included patients with HbA1C 5.7%- 6.4% not on insulin or oral hypoglycaemic agents and aged between 18-75 years. The intervention consisted of a personalised plant-based diet, physical activity, psychological support, and medical management.

According to the researchers of the study,  47.1% of patients achieved prediabetes remission. Significant weight loss and improvements were observed in HbA1c, BMI, fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, insulin resistance, lipid profile, and blood pressure. “Notably, 34% of patients lost more than 10% of their body weight. Females achieved greater reductions in weight and BMI than males,” said Dr. Pramod Tripathi, Founder, Freedom from Diabetes.

“Prediabetes is a growing health concern in India with an estimated prevalence of about 15%. But it also offers a crucial window period for correcting our lifestyle.,” he added.

This retrospective study was aimed at assessing the effectiveness of an integrated intensive lifestyle intervention. Prediabetes remission was achieved in almost half of the patients, highlighting the effectiveness of a tailored multidisciplinary approach for managing prediabetes in the Indian population.
