A very few people have had such a storming debut in IPL as the one Manan Vohra had during the Pune Warriors vs Kings XI Punjab game at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium on Sunday.

The 19-year-old Chandigarh lad, given his first chance in the IPL by skipper Adam Gilchrist, repaid the faith reposed in him by stroking a breezy 28-ball 43,powering his team to victory. Vohra smacked seven boundaries in his innings and took a special liking to Ashok Dinda, hitting the pacer for four consecutive boundaries in the third over of the Punjab chase. What made Vohra’s knock special was the nonchalance with which he handled the Pune bowler.

The Warriors struggled to 99 for nine off their 20 overs and made the 22-yards look spiteful.

However,Vohra hit cleanly through the line and was at home smacking the ball on the rise. He also had no qualms about pulling short balls,a variety which the Warriors dished out frequently. Speaking after his whirlwind knock,Vohra said that he was nervous before the game.

“The faith showed in me by the skipper and the coach really helped me over the line. The captain and my teammates told me to play my natural game and that helped,” he said. Vohra seemed to be in his natural attacking element right from the go as he uppishly flicked Dinda through mid-wicket to record his first boundary.

“My teammates had told me to play the same way I play in practice matches. That advice also set my mind at ease as I walked out to bat,” he said.

The pain of missing the U-19 world cup in August last year was something that Vohra had to tide over and doing well in the IPL was something that was high on his list.

“I missed the World Cup due to a finger injury. Those three to four months after the injury were hell for me and my family. However,I am glad to have made a good start in the IPL,” he said.
