The University of Pune (UoP) Vice Chancellor Narendra Jadhav has stated that the university will take strict action against the 93 colleges that have not initiated the process of recruiting principals. Addressing a press meet on Sunday,Jadhav said,Its mainly the unaided colleges that function without full-time principals. If 140 out of 143 aided college have principals, out of the 324 unaided colleges,200 have just started the process and have requested UoP for a selection committee, Jadhav said.
However,93 colleges have not taken any note of the UoPs directive to appoint a principal. Most of these are unaided rural colleges and the UoP will take strict action against them, including freezing fresh admissions, Jadhav said.
Jadhav said, the main factors behind the recruitment issue are unavailability of qualified candidates and if there are qualified candidates they are not willing to join because of the pension policy. Any candidate, who willingly joins as a principal, will not be counted to become eligible for pension. Therefore, not many eligible persons are willing to take up the position as principals, said Jadhav.
The university had written to the state government about this problem a month-and-a-half ago and the state education minister had called a meeting in the Mantralaya last week.
Jadhav also said that the university will get Rs eight crore from the Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window, the scholarship, fellowship and academic exchange programme financed by the European Union. The university academic council will meet on Monday and Tuesday.
