Among the fastest urbanising constituency in Pune, water scarcity, waste disposal facility, traffic along with security issues has made Hadapsar the worst affected constituency in the city.
The constituency has had legislators elected from different political parties since its delimitation in 2009. Currently, the constituency is represented by Chetan Tupe of NCP since 2019, before which it was represented by BJP’s Yogesh Tilekar from 2014 to 2019 and Mahadeo Babar from Shiv Sena (united) from 2009 till 2014.
Water scarcity
Hadapsar is plagued by the problem of water scarcity. Water is supplied by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), which is trying to resolve water woes through a 24*7 water supply project. Although work on the water supply project is underway, it’s not much relief to citizens who have to shell out from their pockets for water tankers. “There have been legislators elected from different political parties but no one has been able to resolve the water woes here,” said Kamla Lonkar of Mohammadwadi.
Hadapsar area was known to be the place where the waste of the whole city was dumped or disposed. Residents have faced the ill-effects of garbage dumping although the main dumping ground falls just outside the jurisdiction of the constituency. The situation has improved with citizens fighting against the issue but not much has changed.
Urbanisation affects green cover
The rapid urbanisation—mushrooming with the growth of the real estate— is reducing green cover. The projects for which hill slopes are being cut is going to have long-term impact in the area. It is due to the changing geographical situation that the area has witnessed flooding of roads during monsoon.
Road infra
The work on the proposed Katraj-Kondhwa road in the constituency has been delayed for years. It has emerged as an accident prone road as the project is incomplete and heavy traffic only compounds the situation. The Solapur road, which connects the constituency to other parts of city, is the most busy road that compounds the traffic woes of commuters.
Security concerns
The constituency is a cosmopolitan area and has a large minority community population. It has unfortunately earned bad name due to arrest of citizens for links with terrorist or banned organisations.
