Under-7 chess: top seed Bethi beaten

Haryana's Khushi Hombal caused the biggest shock of the opening day of the National under-7 chess championship at Bharati Vidyapeeth University on Sunday by beating girls' top seed Natura Bethi of Andhra Pradesh.

Haryana’s Khushi Hombal caused the biggest shock of the opening day of the National under-7 chess championship at Bharati Vidyapeeth University on Sunday by beating girls’ top seed Natura Bethi of Andhra Pradesh. Hombal’s victory was all the more creditable for the fact that it was achieved with black pieces. Moreover,Bethi was the only FIDE-rated player among the 64 players in the girls’ section.

Other unexpected results saw fifth seed Ananya Parikh of Gujarat losing to Orissa’s Aditi Mohanti and Orissa’s Aditi Mohanti holding sixth seed Ananya Patel of Karnataka to a draw. The boys’ section,in contrast,saw an easy ride for the seeds,with all of the top ten seeds winning their opening fixtures.

Perfect start for Aditya

Top seed M Aditya from Tamil Nadu continued his perfect start to the National under-7 chess championship at Bharati Vidyapeeth University with a second-round win,with black pieces,over Dhanush Bharadwaj of West Bengal. The other seeds in the boys’ section had a solid day as well,apart from seventh seed Nihal Sarin of Kerala,who was held to a draw by Jharkhand’s unseeded Utkarsh Kumar.

Among girls,besides Hombal downing girls’ top seed Bethi — Bethi is the only FIDE-rated player among the 64 in the girls’ section — second seed Aditi Iyer suffered an upset at the hands of Delhi’s Jessica.
