Agnes de Mille once said,“The truest expression of a people is in its dances and its music. Bodies never lie.” Nowhere does music and dance collide as resolutely as in a nightclub, and Dash Berlin is most comfortable in this environment. Born Jeff Sutorius in The Hague,Dash was influenced musically at a very young age by his family members, who had a wide-ranging taste in music. “Perhaps the person who influenced me the most was my father.” he says,“He was a distinguished drummer for a jazz band – it is through him that I got acquainted to rhythm.”

Dash’s rise to being considered one of the best DJs in the world has been meteoric, with his debut album The New Daylight being well received in all quarters, from the audience to the critics. En route,he has performed everywhere possible, from shopping malls to illegal warehouse parties. But success has not gone to his head. “I am just the guy next door,” he says humbly. “The thing is,I don’t consider what I am doing to be work,it is just my passion. I’m a guy who is really happy to be able to DJ,and fortunately for me,people like the kind of music I create, because for me,music is reflective of my emotions.”

His love affair with DJ-ing began quite early. While still in school,he started enjoying electronic music, and would only listen to the mix tapes that his older sister would get from clubs. In his teens,he started working at a record shop and became a dedicated vinyl collector, especially interested in melodic, synthesized house music, which would later come to be known as Trance. Inspired by the great talents of his times,he developed his distinctive style of mixing and producing. His break came when he was performing for the Love Parade in Berlin. “More than a million people were dancing on the streets, all at the same time! I had never, nor have ever since, seen anything quite like it,” he exclaims. In fact,Berlin left an indelible impression on him. “As an ode to a great metropolis and her engaging, urban landscape,I decided there and then to incorporate Berlin in my name.”

Dash, who is in the city as part of his India tour,is in the country for the first time, and he is quite excited to be here. “I am quite psyched to be performing in India, because this is where trance really traces its roots from,” he concludes.

Dash Berlin will be performing at 1 Lounge,at 7:00 pm.
