Earlier, the state government had instructed public vehicles to install speed governors, setting a different deadline for different kind of vehicles.
While school buses registered after May 1 had been asked to come to the RTO with the device fitted, members of the Bus Rickshaw Federation said that they will be waiting for the state government to come out with the school bus policy and then get the device installed by June 15.
Baba Shinde, president,Maharashtra State Private School Bus Owners Association said,Recently,we held a meeting with the Principal Secretary (Transport) and told him that we have no issues with getting the device installed on the vehicles. The state government is going to release the new school bus policy on May 15. Once we go through the document,we will install the device in all vehicles within a month.
The aim of installing the device is to make sure that a vehicle does not exceed a particular speed limit. Transport Commissioner,Mumbai has sent directives to the RTO on how and when to install the device on the vehicles. The school buses will be the first vehicles to have the device installed on them. Following them, contract carriage buses, national permit holders, tankers and dumpers will also need to get the device installed. At the meeting,we discussed that tankers and trailors are involved in lot of accidents. We have appealed to the officials to get the devices installed in the accident prone vehicles first, after the school buses, Shinde said.
However,Arun Yeola, regional transport officer,Pune said,The vehicles have been asked to install the speed governors under the motor vehicles act. They are not related to the school bus policy in anyway and the bus owners should work according to the deadlines that they have been given.
