Towards Empowerment
The sixth edition of Bhimthadi Jatra will be held from December 14 – 18 at the Agricultural Grounds. Organised by the Agriculture Development Trust,visitors can buy handmade products like paintings,pots,clothes,gift items,bags and so on. More than 500 self -help groups from around the state will be participate in the festival this year. The stalls will feature a lot of these groups wherein the women will sell their products directly to the bigger markets to gain more customers.
Change Makers
Make a Difference (MAD),an Indian social organisation,operating at three centres in Pune,was awarded the World Summit Youth Award (WSYA) on Saturday,November 12 at Gratz in Austria. MAD,which is a youth volunteer network that works with underprivileged children in India,tries to empower children in orphanages,street shelters and homes. The WSYA selects and promotes the best practice in e-Content. It demonstrates young peoples potential to create outstanding digital content and serves as a platform for people from all UN member states to work together in the efforts to reduce poverty and hunger. Last July,over 700 projects put down their names to be considered for the prestigious award. In August,a special panel of change-makers – 20 young leaders from 17 countries sat down to evaluate the entries. Right now,close to a 1000 MAD volunteers teach close to 3500 kids in Bengaluru,Bhopal,Chandigarh,Chennai,Cochin,Coimbatore,Delhi,Gwalior,Hyderabad,Kolkata,Lucknow,Mangalore,Mumbai,Nagpur,Pune,Thiruvananthapuram,Vellore,Vijayawada and Vishakapatnam. MAD has three centres in Pune – The Observations Home for Boys in Shivaji Nagar,Karve Sthree Shikshan Sanstha and S Crispins Home with 120 volunteers teaching upto 200 kids.
