When Team India were taking their victory lap in Wankhade after winning the World Cup,fans in Pune, after bouts of match tension and a final shouts of celebrations, were eating a delicious World Cup cake.
Expecting a final win after the semis in Mohali,Savita Doshi from Aundh had decided to combine her passion for cakes with the cricket frenzy. She went ahead and baked a replica of the Cup.
I began my preparations on Friday and decided to make an eggless chocolate cake of about 2.5 kg. The icing was made of home made ghee. The cake has a pitch made of Cadbury with a bat and ball made from chocolate and stumps, with the World Cup mounted on the cake.
The cup is made of lollipop, biscuits and lollipop sticks, where as the green ground is of green icing, said Doshi who is in her late fifties.
Her husband Prafulla helped her in deciding the material that could be used to make the replica. It was he who suggested I use Cadbury for the pitch and make the bat and ball from Milky bar and lollipop, she said.
Usually I make colours made from palak, beet without letting it have a tinge of their taste. I havent been able to make colours at home for the World Cup cake as it requires at least five days to make these colours, she said.
On Saturday evening, after tense moments during the match, neighbours waiting anxiously to share the cake, trooped in,beaming,to take a bite. Doshi has been baking cakes for 16 years with a course and began by making them for the family.
She had made cakes depicting Dahi Handi and another one for Krishna Janmashthami.
